Evaluation of Fuel Benefits Depending on Continuous Descent Approach Procedures

چکیده
In this work arrival traffic following a continuous descent approach profile into the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was simulated based on actual recorded traffic data. The fuel burn for the simulated traffic was estimated using the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption model and compared to a baseline simulation of the as-flown trajectories, where the continuous descent approach profile was not followed. Several sources of variability that impact the fuel savings were examined, including separation minima, types of maneuver to absorb the delays, and composition of aircraft weight category in the fleet mix. The results indicate that fuel savings depended on a number of factors, including aircraft weight, number of stepdowns, and the type of air traffic control maneuver used to impart delay to the aircraft. These effects are estimated using simulation.

Investigation of Potential Fuel Savings Due to Continuous-Descent Approach
The continuous-descent approach is among the key concepts of the Next Generation Air Transportation System. Although a considerable number of researchers have been devoted to the estimation of potential fuel savings of the continuous-descent approach, fewhave attempted to explain the fuel savings observed in field tests from an analytical point of view. This paper focuses on the evaluation of t...

متن کاملBenefits of Continuous Descent Operations in High-Density Terminal Airspace Under Scheduling Constraints
This study estimates the potential benefits of continuous descents for more than 480,000 flights to 25 major airports in the National Airspace System. While reduced fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are expected for these procedures, the benefits during periods of congestion are not well understood. To address this gap, baseline trajectories were constructed from flight plan and tra...
متن کاملEfficiency Benefits Using the Terminal Area Precision Scheduling and Spacing System
NASA has developed a capability for terminal area precision scheduling and spacing (TAPSS) to increase the use of fuel-efficient arrival procedures during periods of traffic congestion at a high-density airport. Sustained use of fuel-efficient procedures throughout the entire arrival phase of flight reduces overall fuel burn, greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution. The TAPSS system is a 4...
متن کاملAssessment of the feasible CTA windows for efficient spacing with energy-neutral CDO
Continuous descent operations (CDO) with controlled times of arrival (CTA) at one or several metering fixes could enable environmentally friendly procedures at the same time that terminal airspace capacity is not compromised. This paper focuses on CTA updates once the descent has been already initiated, assessing the feasible CTA window (and associated fuel consumption) of CDO requiring neither...
